GB Under-18 Women Fall to Germany in Semi-Final

Great Britain Under-18 Women’s hopes of a spot in the final against Ireland were dashed with a 64-55 defeat at the hands of Germany in the Division B European Championships semi-final on in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday evening.

Vanessa Ellis’ side appeared in control through the first half, leading by four at the break, but an abysmal start to the third period, where Germany reeled off a 14-0 run saw them fall into a hole they would not recover from.

They have set up a third place contest with Poland on Sunday.

Shauna Harrison led GB with 16 points, whilst Holly Winterburn finished with 15.

Despite falling behind early after a 9-3 opening from Germany, GB responded. Harrison registered a quick five points, and Winterburn followed with a three for an 8-0 run to take the lead.

GB kept their composure to hold a 16-13 lead after the opening period. Charlotte Ellmore started proceedings in the second period with four points on her own. Back to back threes from Ellmore and Winterburn gave GB what would be their largest lead of the game, 25-17, with 6:39 to play in the half. At the break, GB were holding on to a 35-31 lead.

A 14-0 run start to the third sealed GB’s fate. GB were unable to get on the scoreboard until 6 and a half minutes into the quarter, as Harrison ended the drought with a three pointer. Germany immediately responded at the other end as they had found their rhythm and wouldn’t let GB get closer than 5 the rest of the way.
