GB U20s Dominated by Czech Republic

Great Britain Under-20s suffered a heavy 96-50 loss at the hands of the Czech Republic on Saturday, falling to 0-3 at the Division B European Championships in Bulgaria as they still search for their first taste of victory.

The Czech team delivered one of the most dominant performances of the tournament, putting the shackles on GB on defence and nailing their own shots on offence, as they controlled the game from tip to buzzer.

“I think that’s probably the best team we’ve seen in the tournament from 1 to 12,” said head coach Matt Johnson after the loss. “The calibre of the players; 12 for 28 from the three point line, we’re disappointed that we didn’t defend it better but we also know that we’re a very young team and we’re growing.

“We’ve got better in each game. Sometimes the scoreboard doesn’t tell us that and the girls are a little bit down about it, but I think we showed willing, we showed fight in this performance as well and that’s something we’re incredibly proud of. Coaches are working hard to help the girls find solutions, players are working hard and I think that’s all we can ask at this moment.”

Five Czechs scored in double figures, whilst Claire Paxton was the only British player with a double-digit score, finishing with 13 points.

Great Britain will now have a day off before returning to game action on Monday when they will face Latvia.
