Peter Buckle to Double Up as GB U20s Head Coach

British Basketball has announced senior women’s head coach Peter Buckle will head the coaching and team staff for the under-20 women’s team as well this summer.

Buckle will take up his additional duties at the conclusion of June’s qualifiers for EuroBasket Women 2015, with a view to strengthening future links between the two teams. He will be working with a young and talented age group expected to form the core group of senior internationals in the coming years.

Leading youth coach Karen Burton from GB Regional Institute, Barking Abbey, will work as Buckle’s assistant while Loughborough Riders head coach Matt Harber will join as Assistant Coach/Performance Analyst, fresh from his club lifting the England Basketball Division 1 Playoff title. Former England youth team manager Ollie Jerram will take on the team management responsibilities.

“I look forward to the opportunity to work with our GB youth players and coaches. Commitment to development is important to underpin longer-term success,” Buckle told gbbasketball.com.

British Basketball’s National Teams Director Warwick Cann said; “Peter’s appointment is a great opportunity for him to assess our emerging talent with an eye for next year and the senior team’s journey towards Tokyo 2020.

“There is no doubt that this opportunity to work for an extended period of both training and competition with the senior head coach will be invaluable to our players.

“To be successful on court and despite our constant challenges we must work sensibly at multiple levels with player development.”

The GB U20s will compete at the under-20 women’s FIBA Europe Division-B Championships in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia in July. The Great Britain girls face tough opposition in the 10-team group of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Hungary, Israel, Norway, Germany, Portugal and Lithuania.

Following the appointment of the team staff, it is anticipated that the invited squad list will be announced in the coming weeks with the preparation camp scheduled to commence on Friday, 27 June.
