Cardiff Archers Win National Cup Final

The Cardiff Archers claimed victory over the Sevenoaks Suns to win the National Cup Final in Sheffield on Sunday. A close, toughly fought game saw mid table Cardiff come out on top in 2015 after being the runners up in 2014.

Cardiff gained convincing wins throughout the finals, breezing past the Solent Suns, Manchester Mystics and Barking Abbey on their way to a 2nd consecutive Womens Final. Judit Fritz received the MVP award after leading the Archers to their win with 24 points, while other big performances from Jess Jenkins with 22 points and Kate Butters with 13 points and 8 rebounds helped seal the 74-63 victory. Sarah Carr top scored for the Suns, with a game high 30 points.

The action was end to end from the start with the lead changing several times in the first quarter, but it was Cardiff who gained momentum towards the end of the first section of play edging forward to take a 19-12 lead. The end of the first half saw Cardiff’s lead cut to just two points and a scoreline of 33-31 going into the break. Three-pointers were forthcoming from both teams in the third, with Cardiff able to stretch their lead to four points, taking the score to 52-48 ahead of a tense final quarter.

A surge of energy from Cardiff in the fourth saw them score 22 points in the quarter and come away with the 74-63 win, Head Coach Stef Collins said after the game: ” It feels amazing. It is a huge day for us as a club, last year had the heartbreak of just missing out and so today we were able to go one step further and bring the silverware home. It was a tough game and credit to a young energetic Sevenoaks team who were hitting some big shots today. We were able to stay really focused and played to our strengths to get the win.”
