GB Senior Women’s Schedule Released

The main dates for this summer’s exciting senior GB women’s schedule have been confirmed as the clock ticks down towards their third successive appearance at EuroBasket Women Final Round.

A gateway to the 2016 Olympics, the winner of EuroBasket Women 2015 will grab an automatic ticket for Rio, with the other top five placed clubs continuing their dream by sealing a spot at next year’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Head coach Peter Buckle who guided his team through the qualification process last year during his first summer at the helm, will welcome 20 players into a preparation camp on Saturday 2nd of May.

The camp will be held at the University of Worcester Arena, the location of the team’s terrific performances en-route to punching their ticket to the 2015 edition of Final Round in Hungary and Romania.

Prior to departing camp, the intention is to reduce the roster to 14 players ahead of a trip to France, to play in a preparation tournament involving Slovak Republic, Serbia and the host nation. This will take place in Lyon between the 14th and 16th May.

Coach Buckle and his players will then head to Spain for a second preparation tournament involving the hosts, Canada and Poland. This will take place in Bilbao between 28th and 30th May.

The 12 players who will represent Great Britain at EuroBasket Women 2015 will then be revealed in the days prior to Final Round tipping off.

GB have been drawn in Group C and will play in Szombathely, Hungary. It promises to be a thrilling four days of action, with Coach Buckle and his team taking part in a hectic four games in a row.

First up on 12 June, they will play 2011 champions Russia and search for their first win against their opponents at a major tournament. They then play Latvia on 13 June, followed by Serbia on 14 June – two teams GB beat at EuroBasket Women 2013 during the initial group stage. They will then wrap up the first phase with a clash against Croatia on 15 June, who they beat in the second round two years ago.

If GB qualify for the second phase this time around by finishing in the top three of Group C, the team will make the short trip to Gyor for the next stage of the competition. If they finish in the top four of their Group during the second phase, they will head to the Final phase which will be held in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.

“We are well in advance with our organisation for this year and once again, we look forward to using the University or Worcester Arena as our home base before EuroBasket Women,” said National Teams Director, Warwick Cann.

“We have planned well for what we most need, while I am delighted that we have a schedule which includes some of the world’s best teams in terms of preparation games.
