Hatters Win WBBL Championship

History was made this weekend as the Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters became the first ever WBBL season champions, beating out their season long rivals Nottingham Wildcats in a 74-64 victory, to claim the best record of the season, in the final weekend of the regular season.

The Hatters had already won a tough match against Nottingham earlier in the season in the WBBL Trophy final.

The two teams came in to this weekends title deciding match with identical 16-1 records in the league, with the Wildcats beating Sheffield in late October, before Vanessa Ellis’ side marched on a five month long 15-game winning streak in the WBBL Championship to snatch the the top spot.

Top scoring in the game was Hatters and Great Britain star Steph Gandy, who finished the game with 20 points and 7 rebounds, while teammate Helen Naylor added 17. The Wildcats top performer was Annie Kassongo, coming away from the game with 18 points.

The newly crowned league champions are set to face the Sevenoaks Suns in the Quarter Final Playoffs which will start on April the 11th, with the Wildcats set to go against The Manchester Mystics.
