Jo Leedham makes history after being crowned EuroCup Women winner

Great Britain Senior Women’s star Jo Leedham made history on Wednesday night after she became the first British player to win the prestigious EuroCup Women title.

She was at the centre of the action for Tango Bourges Basket as the French powerhouse built on an 11 point advantage from the first leg with a 54-53 success against 2015 winners Villeneuve d’Ascq.

Leedham finished the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds to follow up on the double-double which she harvested in the first encounter.

Playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,000, ‘Le Prado’ erupted as the three-time EuroLeague Women champions delivered their first European trophy for 15 years.

“This definitely makes up for our disappointing EuroLeague Women season and it’s great to have the honour of being the first British player to win a competition like EuroCup Women,” enthused Leedham after the final buzzer as she proudly clutched her winners medal.

“It’s always good to have British players winning things and I am glad that people know I am out here in France competing and fighting to find success.

“It’s also nice to have this medal after what the GB team achieved with our comeback win against Montenegro – it gives that feeling of confidence heading into our big EuroBasket Women qualifiers in November.”

Her accomplishment was praised by Senior Women’s Head Coach, Jose Maria ‘Chema’ Buceta who added, “Jo is a role model for young players and this is a fantastic and historic achievement.

“She is flying the flag very high for British basketball at the highest level and is always striving to improve and it’s that appetite for hard work which has brought her deserved rewards.

“I am sure everyone in British basketball will be quick to also pass on their congratulations to Jo for this incredible success.”

It could prove to be a momentous 24 hours for GB women ballers. For last year’s leading performer at EuroBasket Women Final Round in the shape of Temi Fagbenle, is hoping to be drafted to the WNBA on Thursday.
