WBBL 2017-18 Recaps – Week 5

Just two unbeaten records remain in tact, while the quarter-finals lineup in the WBBL Cup was completed.

SHEFFIELD HATTERS 76-73 NOTTINGHAM WILDCATS

It’s now a 6-0 start for the Hatters as they edged out the two-time defending league champions.

Steph Gandy netted 24 points in the win, while recent GB call-up Jennifer Ashton contributed an all-round effort of 11 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

Krisztina Velkey tied the game with a late triple before Gandy’s go-ahead basket with Sheffield holding on for the win.

Ashley Harris had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats as they drop to 2-3 on the season.

LEICESTER RIDERS 64-74 SEVENOAKS SUNS

Sevenoaks continued their winning start to the season after overcoming a slow start to see off Leicester on the road.

The home side opened with a 31-17 first quarter, but were then held to just 13 points in the middle periods as the Suns took control.

Judit Fritz top scored with 24 points with Renee Busch adding 11 points off the bench.

Six teams battled for the three remaining spots in the WBBL Cup last eight.

TEAM NORTHUMBRIA 87-65 DURHAM PALATINATES

Northumbria advanced to the quarter-finals as they eased past North-East rivals Durham.

Evelyn Ovner starred with 27 points with Alison Gorrell adding 23 as the duo combined for 50 points in the win.

Giulia Simioni added a double-double of 19 points along with 11 assists having shot 7-of-8 from the field.

Durham led 16-22 after the opening period, but a 49-27 second half saw the hosts ease to victory.

Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee had a team-high 26 points for the Palatinates.

BA LONDON LIONS 71-73 OAKLANDS WOLVES (OT)

Oaklands moved into the next round after securing a dramatic victory in an overtime thriller.

Rachel Morris sent the game into overtime at 62-62 before Krisztina Nagy sealed the win in the extra period with the 3-point game-winner.

Kellie Ring provided the assist for the win and finished with a team-high 18 points.

Ursula Cotton had 28 points and 11 rebounds on her BA debut, but was unable to help her new side pull out the win.

CARDIFF MET ARCHERS 55-64 CALEDONIA PRIDE

Caledonia reached the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time after beating Cardiff away from home.

Sarah Thomson top scored with 14 points, while Rosanna Reynolds closely followed with 13 along with 10 rebounds.

Pride trailed at the end of the third, but produced a strong finish to take the final period 8-21 for the win.

Merissa Quick led Cardiff with a 25-point haul as they fell at the first hurdle.
