Great Britain Under-20s Stun Lithuania For First Win

Great Britain’s Under-20s Women claimed their first win at this year’s European Championships in Oradea, Romania with a stunning 65-54 success over Lithuania, on Monday.

Jeff Jones’ side faced an early exit with defeat, but rallied from a double-digit deficit to inflict a first loss on Lithuania and improve to 1-2.

Savannah Wilkinson fired in a 34-point haul – the best points tally by a GB player at the Under-20 Euros – while Ire Ozzy-Momodu set the record for most rebounds with 19 to go along with 15 points.

Box score.

Ozzy-Momodu found early success inside and went 4 of 4 in the opening period for eight points as GB kept with their unbeaten opponents early on. Shauna Harrison’s three tied the game at 12-12, but Lithuania began to dominate on the break and closed on an 8-0 run to lead by 11 at 17-28.

However, GB rallied with a stunning 16-5 spell in the second, spurred on by the scoring prowess of Wilkinson. The FSU sophomore moved to 11 points in the period to put GB ahead at 35-34 having scored seven straight at one stage.

Lithuania responded to move back in front and capitalised on a lapse in the GB defence on an inbounds play to take a 35-38 advantage into half-time.

The gap hit seven points early in the third, but that would be the largest deficit GB would face as they continued to plug away, particularly through the efforts on the glass from Ozzy-Momodu.

Down 45-50 ahead of the final period, GB turned the screw on defence as they held their opponents to just four points in an impressive fourth quarter effort to secure victory.

Wilkinson’s triple tied the game at 52-52 before putting GB ahead with less than five minutes remaining as she went on to score 14 in the fourth to help seal an impressive victory.
