Brits in College: Week 4 Recap

Thanksgiving week and a few teams took the opportunity to undertake road trips. Read on to find out how they fared and more in this week’s round-up.

Player of the Week

British Basketball have an exceptional talent in Temi Fagbenle who does stellar work, week in, week out.

This week was no different as her Harvard Crimson took on and beat Northeastern 81 – 74. Temi played 30 minutes, had her 9th career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. She rounded off her stats with 3 blocks, 2 steals and an assist.

She followed that up with a season-high 20 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists on 8/13 shooting in just 20 minutes in a loss to St John’s, which saw Harvard’s winning streak halted at 6 games.

NCAA Division 1

Erin McGarrachan is having her best results on the college hardwood this season and was instrumental yet again in helping her team to the slender 3 point win over South Alabama.  In 33 starter minutes, Erin added 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Former Southend Swifts & Sevenoaks Suns player Maisie Elston had 4 minutes off the bench but did not add to the score. Interestingly, Hoopsfix has learnt that Maisie is an aspiring young coach who has already gained some recognition for her work. Look out for a feature on this soon.

Shequila Joseph’s Ole Miss Rebels took on and beat Louisiana-Monroe78-72.  Shequila had 9 points and 6 rebounds in 24 starter minutes. They won by a larger margin when they played Tulane a few days later, winning 89 – 66. Shequila added 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks in 18 starter minutes.

Becca Allison’s Old Dominion Monarchs had to fight hard to snap their 3 game losing streak in their game against Boston University which they won 62 – 56.  With almost identical scores at half time, the Lady Monarchs never let up, bringing home the win. Former City of Edinburgh Kool Kats Allison had 6 points and a steal in 22 minutes off the bench

Chantel Charles came off the bench in her Maine Black Bears win over Massachusetts but did not trouble the scoreboard. In the loss to Wisconsin Green Bay the next day, former Haringey Angel Charles put up 7 points, 2 rebounds and a steal in only 13 minutes play.

Cristal Turner’s Utah State Aggies fell to Hampton 88- 98 in a high scoring game. A nine point first half lead for Hampton was really the difference maker. Cristal played 14 minutes off the bench and had 6 points.

The Aggies were able to get some redemption by beating Cal State Northridge  75 – 67 the next day. Cristal played 28 minutes off the bench, had 3 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists

Ella Clark’s Long beach state 49er’s must like playing against West Coast Conference Opponents as they played and beat Pepperdine 74 – 61.  Ella started and contributed 2 points, 5 rebounds and a block in 17 minutes.

Thanksgiving week was hardly a feast for the Lana Doran’s Gardner Webb Bulldogs on the hardwood as they lost both games they played this week.  First up were North Carolina Central (58 – 89 L) where Lana came off the bench and had 12 minutes.

Next up were Davidson Wildcats who were able to hold on to a slender 4 point lead to take the 78 – 74 win.  Lana had 4 points, an assist and a steal in 17 minutes off the bench.

A day after feasting on their Thanksgiving turkey, Melita Emanuel-Carr’s University of Illinois Chicago Flames had Bobcats on their menu as they took on and beat Ohio 76 – 67 at the San Juan Shootout Thanksgiving Tournament. Melita got a scant 2 minutes of time off the bench.

Next up were Texas Southern Tigers and the Flames were in no mood for giving, Thanksgiving or not, beating the Tigers 70 – 66. GB U20 International Melita played 8 minutes off the bench for 2 points and 2 rebounds.

Janice Monakana’s Toledo Rockets were in California this week where they eked out a 59 – 58 win over Cal state Fullerton.  Janice came off the bench, added 4 points and 7 rebounds in 20 minutes of action. They were beaten handily the next day 57 – 81 by St Marys University. Janice added 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in 24 minutes.

A thanksgiving New York road trip it was for Ashleigh Munn’s Southern Utah Thunderbirds. They lost 60-85 to Georgia tech. Ashleigh had 5 points in only 7 minutes of play. The Thunderbirds went on to defeat Long Island University Brooklyn 57 – 44 the next day. Ashleigh played a scant 1 minute.

NCAA Division 2

Lauren Milligan’s Chestnut Hill Griffins took on and lost 68 – 78 to Wilmington University. Lauren did work, putting up 7 points, 5 rebounds and an assist in 31 starter minutes.

Claire Paxton’s Colorado Christian University Cougars were beaten by Northwest Nazarene  72 – 60.  Claire contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds and a block in 30 starter minutes.  It was an altogether quieter affair when they played and beat Central Washington University 89 – 75. Claire played 29 minutes and contributed 2 rebounds. Although Claire is not a big scorer, her defensive intensity means her coach hardly takes her off the hardwood.

Whitney Allen’s Edinboro University Fighting Scots lost a heartbreaker to Winston-Salem State University 58 – 59. In a game in which the largest lead held by any team was 4 points, Whitney’s 6 rebounds in 19 bench minutes were not enough to help her team get the win.

Rosie Hynes Florida Tech Panthers took on and lost to Flagler 81 – 95.  Rosie got the starting nod, played 33 minutes and contributed 11 points. In an altogether closer game the next day against Pitt-Johnstown which the Panthers won 83 – 81, Rosie played 20 minutes off the bench and added 3 points.

Michelle Turner’s Fort Lewis Skyhawks needed every one of her 9 total points to take down St. Edwards 78 – 76. Michelle came off the bench and played 16 minutes.

Canada

Kristie Shiels Calgary Dinos played and swept Brandon in a double header with the first game being decided in the last 6 seconds. The Dinos went on to take that game 66 – 64 and absolutely needed all 12 of Kristie’s points; the result of 4 of 8 shooting from downtown.

The Dinos completed the sweep the next day, running out 20 point winners. Kristie put up 14 points and 5 rebounds in 28 minutes.
