England U16s Fall to Finland

England’s U16 Women were defeated 57-46 by Finland on Monday at the European Championship in Portugal.

Despite the loss England qualified for the 1st-8th place classification games, although they now face an uphill challenge to qualify for the semi finals with their loss against the Finns counting in the next stage.

England led only briefly in the game on Monday, taking a 2-0 lead with the first score of the game and then leading for most of the first three minutes of the second half after they had used an 11-0 run at the end of the second quarter to go into half-time tied.

A 13-4 run for Finland late in the third quarter gave them a narrow edge and England couldn’t get any closer than two points behind for the whole of the final quarter. They were down just three with a little under two minutes left, but failed to score the rest of the way as the Finns made their free throws.

Abigail Johnson led England with 11 points and 13 rebounds and Rhianna-Mae Laing added 9 points and 4 assists.

In the next round of the competition, starting on Wednesday, England will face games against Serbia and Belarus knowing that they will likely have to win both games to progress to the semi finals.

Box score.
